Fashion’s Night Out or In?

Vogue’s Fashion’s Night Out maybe on the oust according to fashion industry insiders. The yearly event has been held every September for the past couple of years. It started as a way to get people interested in shopping again due to the recession. Anna Wintour convinced stores and designers to hold large costly events complete with celebrities, bands, food, drinks etc as a way to pique the interest of the waning consumer. The first event was a huge success and it has been featured in fan favorite TV shows such as “Gossip Girl.” However, as the economy grows and shoppers spend the expenses occurred over one night are starting to outweigh its initial good.
The event causes so much havoc that it is difficult to control the crowds and to keep everyone safe. For example, the Kardashian sister’s boutique Dash was completely shut down by the NYPD. Crowds blocked the streets at a chance to see Kim and her sisters. Eventually, the whole event was closed and police had the entire store staff leave to prevent any more damage or crowd rioting. The Kardashian’s store was merely an example of trouble controlling the crowds as FNO becomes more celebrity based and less about fashion.
Now, shoppers are buying luxury brands more in the last fiscal year then they have in months. People are no long as tight on their money as they once were two years ago. This combined with the costly events held during Fashion’s Night Out is making industry experts consider if FNO is actually doing any good. The fate of Vogue’s Fashion’s Night Out will not be determined until planning starts to get under way for next year. Until then the world will just have to wait to see if Fashion’s Night Out is officially in or out.
